The Silverfish Lepisma saccharina is a small wingless insect (in the order Zygentoma) being up to 25mm.
Its name derives from the insects silver/grey colour together with the ‘fish-like’ appearance when it moves.
Silverfish are considered household pests due to their consumption and destruction of household property. They consume matter that contains polysaccharides. These include books, carpet and clothing.
During extreme scarcity of food, the silverfish may even set upon leather and synthetic fabrics. If a water source is available, the silverfish can survive for up to a year without eating.
